Open Space and Recreation Plan Project

We are pleased to announce that the Conservation Commission (Commission) has begun the process of updating the Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP). This update will address the continued need to preserve and protect natural resources as well as enhance and expand recreational opportunities for all. The plan will seek to highlight the unique natural amenities and recreational opportunities found in every section of Town.

Preservation and enhancement of natural open spaces for passive and active recreation is critical to maintaining a high quality of life in Wakefield. These areas encourage community gathering to support holistic well-being, a sense of belonging, enhanced community social connections, along with opportunities for fun.

The draft OSRP is informed by previous resident input gathered during the public workshop on April 27, 2023, and a community survey (view the survey results). An additional public workshop was held on January 18, 2024.

The OSRP documents the Town’s open space and recreation resources, monitors changing community needs, and outlines an action plan to address those needs. It is updated every seven years to reflect changes that have occurred in Wakefield.

The OSRP helps the Town:

  • Maintain and enhance benefits of open space and recreation resources.
  • Guide policy decisions for open space, natural resources, and recreational issues.
  • Support efforts to acquire funding.
