Golden Hills Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC)

The Golden Hills ACEC was designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs on August 26, 1987. The total area comprises approximately 450 acres across Wakefield, Melrose, and Saugus. Wakefield is home to 50 of those acres. This designation was given based on the diverse natural characteristics, plant and animal life. Read the study of the area conducted in 1886.

The area contains steep slopes, three ponds, healthy wetlands and vernal pools, and countless varieties of birds and wildlife. It has also been used as a stopover area for migratory birds. Recreational opportunities include hiking and bird-watching.

As part of this parcel sits just 200’ from Breakheart Reservation, the Metropolitan District Commission (now known as the Department of Conservation and Recreation) also wished to raise awareness of and appreciation for the protection of open space in these communities. This designation added a much-welcomed layer of protection.
