Mercury Collection

Residents can safely dispose of mercury at the Nahant Street site on April 21, June 23, August 25, and November 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. No permit is required for this service.

Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Reading and Wakefield co-host hazardous waste days for residents of these two communities. 

November 6, 2021  |  8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Wakefield High School, 60 Farm St.

The following items are collected: 

  • antifreeze

  • arts & crafts supplies

  • car batteries

  • degreasers

  • disinfectants

  • drain cleaners

  • engine & radiator flushes

  • floor cleaners

  • furniture and metal polish

  • gasoline

  • glue

  • moth balls
  • nail polish & remover
  • oil-based paint
  • oven cleaner
  • paint thinner
  • photo chemicals
  • radiator cleaners
  • tires (with or without rims)
  • transmission fluid
  • wax polish
  • wood stripper
  • window cleaners

The following items cannot be collected at the event:

  • ammunition
  • asbestos
  • biologically active, radioactive, or explosive materials
  • dry cleaning fluids
  • fire extinguishers
  • gas cylinders
  • leaves and brush
  • medical waste
  • oil filters
  • organic peroxides
  • PCBs
  • pharmaceuticals
  • rust preservatives
  • sealant
  • septage (must be removed by licensed hauler)
  • smoke detectors
