Trail Head Project

Project Overview

Richardson/Water/New Salem/Fitch/Salem Rail Trail Crossings

The Wakefield Trail Head project proposes to fast track opening of the first segment of the Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail Extension.  This project includes installing 9 new ADA compliant trail heads including the installation of new crosswalks, curb ramps, curb islands, granite bollards as well as installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at the New Salem intersection.  The grant project’s design is consistent with the current Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail Extension and will allow the citizens of Wakefield to utilize the portions of the trail already constructed. To view progress and updates on Lynnfield's portion of the trail, visit Lynnfield's project page.

Please note, the constructed trail is not open to public use as the license agreement with the MBTA has not been finalized and the trail is on MBTA property. The trail is anticipated to be open in July so long as the license agreement is finalized.

Program Background

The Town of Wakefield coordinated the installation of approximately 4,800 linear feet of the shared use path between Main Street and Salem Street as part of a National Grid electric transmission line installation within the MBTA Right-of-Way.  The installation of the roadway crossings were not included with that work. Implementing the proposed upgrades at the five crossings is necessary so that the shared used path will be allow access for all people and also create a more inviting area for residents and visitors.

The Town of Wakefield applied for the 2022 MassTrails Grants Program to help facilitate the installation of the trailheads. MassTrails provides matching grants to communities, public entities and non-profit organizations to plan, design, create, and maintain the diverse network of trails, trail systems, and trails experiences used and enjoyed by Massachusetts residents and visitors. The Town was awarded $200,000 in funding for this project.
