Schedule
On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, work will begin on the shared-use-path on the northbound side of North Avenue. The project involves widening the sidewalk from Church Street to Quannapowitt Parkway and reconstructing it into a shared-use path with a new buffered bike lane to improve multi-model transportation around Lake Quannapowitt. Pedestrian access through the work zone will be detoured to the southbound side of North Avenue at the existing crosswalks. Drivers should always be attentive and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. View the pedestrian detour map.
Access to homes will be provided to the maximum extent possible, but residents should provide additional time to enter/egress driveways. Curbside refuse and recycling should continue to be placed outside by 6 a.m. on residents’ typical collection days.

Program Background
In 2021, the Town contracted the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) to develop a bicycle and pedestrian plan for the Town of Wakefield. The goal was to develop a comprehensive transportation network that could utilize a variety of facilities such as pathways, trails, bike lanes, shared lanes, multi-use pathways, sidewalks, and other facilities. Part of the project included creating an action plan with a list of improvement projects. The plan included this segment of North Ave as a high priority.
