I have seen coyotes in the area. What should I do?

The eastern coyote is well established throughout Massachusetts except on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A medium-sized predator, it is an opportunistic feeder and extraordinarily adaptable to a wide range of habitats. Coyotes thrive in suburban, urban, and rural areas.

To prevent conflict, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife suggests residents:

  • Secure your garbage
  • Keep bird feeder areas clean
  • Protect produce and livestock
  • Feed pets indoors
  • Eliminating shelter for coyotes
  • Cut back brushy edges
  • Keep pets leashed and under your supervision at all times
