I have seen coyotes in the area. What should I do?
The eastern coyote is well established throughout Massachusetts except on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A medium-sized predator, it is an opportunistic feeder and extraordinarily adaptable to a wide range of habitats. Coyotes thrive in suburban, urban, and rural areas.
To prevent conflict, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife suggests residents:
- Secure your garbage
- Keep bird feeder areas clean
- Protect produce and livestock
- Feed pets indoors
- Eliminating shelter for coyotes
- Cut back brushy edges
- Keep pets leashed and under your supervision at all times
