Toilet Tips

  • 20 percent of all toilets leak
  • Toilets use an average of 30 percent of all indoor water use
  • Toilets built prior to 1994 use 3.7 to 7 gallons per flush
  • Replacing an old toilet with a new one can save an average of 22,000 gallons per year

Shower & Faucet Tips

The third highest use of indoor water is bathing, and because most people like to use warm water when they bathe, it is also the second highest use of energy in the home.

  • Consider using a shower head with a flow of less than 2.5 gallons per minute
  • Install aerators on your kitchen and bathroom faucets to reduce indoor water use by 4 percent
  • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth and shaving – this will save more than 5 gallons per day
  • Re-use the water that vegetables are washed in to water your plants
