Pedestrian and Bike Accessibility
Enhanced Bicycle and Pedestrian Access
The Town of Wakefield and Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) are developing a plan to provide safer and enhanced bicycle and pedestrian access in Wakefield. On a larger scale, the Mystic Highlands Greenway project aims to better connect the communities of Wakefield, Stoneham, Malden, Melrose, and Reading through their established walking and cycling network: the Malden River paths, Tri-Community Greenway, Lynn Fells Parkway, Wakefield/Lynnfield Rail Trail, and Lake Quannapowitt. The Public Comment period was open until March 1, 2024.

Complete Streets
The MassDOT Complete Streets Funding Program provides technical assistance and construction funding to eligible municipalities. A complete street is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes—walking, biking, transit and vehicles—for people of all ages and abilities. Improvements may be large scale (ie. corridor-wide improvements) or focused on the needs of a single mode. Learn about Wakefield's Complete Streets initiatives.
Rail Trail
The Rail Trail project includes a shared-use path for pedestrian and bicyclists along an abandoned railroad corridor, beginning at the Main Street/Bennett Street intersection in Wakefield and extending northerly through Lynnfield to the Peabody city-line. Read about the project.
