In 1881, Cornelius Sweetser left $10,000 to the Town of Wakefield to be held in trust to provide "such lectures as will tend to improve and elevate the public mind," and to pay the proceeds "to such charitable organizations...as the municipal officers...may designate to be distributed among the worthy poor..."
UPDATE: Based on recommendations from Board of Health, and in accordance with Governor Baker's regulations on March 15, the 2020 Sweetser Lecture events have been cancelled.
Benefactors, patrons, and ticket holders will who paid by check will automatically receive refunds by mail from the Wakefield Town Accounting Office in approximately 4 to 8 weeks.
All ticket holders who purchased their tickets with cash from Smith’s Drug Store and wish to be reimbursed, please:
- Return your tickets in an envelope that includes: your name, address and telephone number on a sheet of paper,
- Indicate the type(s) of tickets you bought and the amount of reimbursement you are seeking, and
- Mail your tickets to “The Sweetser Lecture Committee, PO Box 1734, Wakefield, MA 01880
- Your reimbursement will be mailed to you from the Wakefield Town Accounting Department in about 4 to 8 weeks upon receipt.
