Infiltration/Inflow (I/I) Reduction Program

Wakefield’s sanitary sewer system provides a disposal system for wastewater discharges originating from homes and businesses. It transports those discharges to the MWRA Deer Island sewer treatment facility. The Department of Public Works administers an Infiltration/Inflow (I/I) Reduction Program for the purpose of eliminating I/I flows that enter the sanitary sewer system. The I/I flows put a burden on the system. They reduce its capacity and cause sewer mains to surcharge and services to backup into businesses and homes.

The I/I flows that enter are a result of defects like cracked pipes and leaking joints in addition to roof drains, outside area drains, and sump pumps connected to the system. The added flows from I/I result in higher costs to the residents and businesses of Wakefield as they increase our MWRA assessment and increase operation and maintenance expenses. Reducing I/I will help to manage our sewer rate for the benefit of all.

How can you help?

  • Do not discharge sump pumps or basement flooding into the sanitary sewer system. If you are currently discharging into the sewer system, review alternatives that will eliminate this practice. The DPW will assist you with solutions. You can contact the DPW Engineering or Sewer Division at (781) 246-6301 ext. 4120.
  • Have your sewer service inspected for cracks, separated joints, or broken pipes. Any defects in the service line should be repaired immediately.
  • Disconnect roof and outside drains that connect into the sewer system.
