According to the EPA, about 30 percent of a household’s water use is outdoors. And in the summer months, it can be as high as 70 percent. Using a rain barrel's stored water for plants, lawn, and landscaping saves water resources and reduces the amount of water purchased from municipal sources.

The deadline to purchase a rain barrel is May 12, 2024, and pickup will occur on Thursday, May 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wakefield Public Works Facility on North Avenue. Barrels are available in forest green, earth brown, Nantucket gray, and unpainted.

The Great American Rain Barrel is a local food importing company that has been repurposing shipping drums into Rain Barrels since 1988. The Great American Rain Barrel Co. has been an approved vendor by the MASS DEP since 2010.
