Main Street Overhead Banner Specifications

The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department (WMGLD) is responsible for hanging overhead banners across Main Street, just south of its intersection with Water Street. 

Once your organization’s request is approved by the Town Council, follow these guidelines when having your banner created. You may wish to run your banner's work order by the WMGLD to ensure it meets the specifications prior to construction: 

Material: Weatherspan Plus 16 oz. or equivalent.  Blackout material should be used if both sides of the banner are to be lettered. 

Rope: 7/16 Multiline New England ropes A.V.E. T.S. 4100 lbs. 

Grommets: #4 brass spur grommets in each corner .

Snaps: Fast eye boat snap, bronze, non- rusting 3/4" eye approximately 30-36” on center at top of banner, sewn securely to top hem .

  • Banner should have a reinforced hem around the complete perimeter. 
  • Corners should be sewn into top and bottom of banner. 
  • 70' of rope should be sewn into top and bottom of banner. 
  • Rope should loop through the corner grommets and should extend past end of banner to attach to banner support poles at top and bottom. 
  • Windholes should be cut into each non-porous banner. The quantity of windholes should be enough to allow the banner not to sway violently in winds. 

Banners are to be dropped off at the WMGLD plant at 480 North Avenue (garage side) the Thursday before it is scheduled to be hung. It must be picked up no later than the Friday after it comes down. If you have any questions, please call the WMGLD at 781 246-6363.
