Wakefield Submits Service Pilot Proposal to MBTA

The MBTA recently provided local communities with the opportunity to propose new service pilots for the bus and commuter rail. The MBTA specifies that the proposals are to require “little or no capital investment” and feature one or more of the following:

  • More frequent service
  • Extended hours of operation
  • New service routes.

The Town surveyed residents during the month of August and performed careful analysis of both survey results and Wakefield’s current bus and commuter rail schedules. Many common themes were present in the survey’s data and are reflected in the proposal.

Town Administrator Stephen P. Maio will be submitting this initial proposal for the MBTA’s consideration. Proposals that meet minimum projections for costs and benefits will be presented to the MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board for consideration. Approved pilot service could begin in fiscal year 2021.

We greatly appreciate all who took the time to provide their suggestions. We will keep you updated on feedback received from the MBTA.
