Save Energy This Summer
(Wakefield, MA) – Saving energy is more important than ever before. The energy market is volatile, translating into higher prices for gas, home heating, and natural gas.
The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department (WMGLD) is also faced with higher costs to purchase the energy that supplies Wakefield homes and businesses with electricity and natural gas.
“We want our customers to save energy, not only to reduce their carbon footprint, but also to save money,” WMGLD General manager Pete Dion said. “There are several things that customers can do now that may make a difference in their monthly bill.”
He suggests taking the following no-cost or low-costs steps to save energy this summer:
- Open windows and use portable or ceiling fans instead of operating your air conditioner whenever possible.
- When you need more relief, use a fan when using a window air conditioner to spread the cool air throughout your home.
- Make sure that your lamps and TVs are away from your air conditioning thermostat. The heat from these appliances will cause the air conditioner to run longer.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. They use less energy and emit much less heat.
- Air-dry the dishes in your dishwasher instead of using the drying cycle.
- Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
- Use cold water to wash your clothes.
- Close the drapes or shades on south- and west- facing windows during the day. The sun can make your air conditioner work two to three times harder.
- Air leaks can waste energy dollars year-round. Caulking and weatherstripping will keep cool air in during the summer.
“Most of these tips require little or no money, are easy to do, and will reduce your energy consumption,” Dion added. “If you need to replace an old inefficient air conditioner or a major appliance to save even more energy, always look for the ENERGY STAR® label. The new energy efficient air conditioners can save you up to 50 percent on your cooling bills.”
