World War II Memorial

In late 2007, Phyllis Hull, at the request of numerous veterans and veterans' organizations within the community, approached the Wakefield Board of Selectmen (now Town Council) regarding the deteriorating condition of the existing Word War II memorial on the upper common. As a result of that meeting, the Board authorized the creation of the World War II Memorial Committee to oversee the replacement of the existing memorial on the upper Common with a new granite memorial on the same site.

The Memorial Wall of Honor's five granite tablets contain the names of the 71 Wakefield citizens who lost their lives, along with the names of the other 2,466 citizens who served in World War II. As a result of a suggestion from John Encarnacao, and approved by the full committee, a Veterans Walk of Remembrance around the memorial honors and recognizes the service of all veterans. This Veterans Walk of Remembrance can accommodate 520 individual granite pavers. Each paver can be inscribed with the name, rank, and branch of a service member who has served, or is currently serving, in the Armed Forces. The honoree does not have to be a resident of Wakefield to be recognized on the paver.
