Energy New England Program
Save energy and money with the Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department …
…energy-saving information … energy audits… energy improvements … incentives for improvements …. and rebates on energy saving appliances...
The WMGLD, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC), is offering an Energy New England program to help customers save energy in their homes. This Home Energy Loss Prevention Service (HELPS) program lets customers get information about simple ways to save energy and helps determine whether an energy audit is needed. If it is, the audit will let customers see where improvements should be made.
Tier 1
Customers call a toll-free hotline (888) 772-4242 to obtain information about energy efficiency, renewable energy, and specific information about their own home's performance. Callers are asked questions to help the hotline operator determine which information, assistance and services will best address the particular needs of the individual customer. If energy improvements are needed, the caller is referred to Tier Two services.
If not, the caller receives information about energy efficiency, the energy usage of appliances, and simple ways to save energy in and around the home.
Customers can also access Tier 1 services through the Internet at www.munihelps.org.
Tier 2
After calling the hotline, the call center operator may recommend that the customer receive an energy audit that includes an evaluation of the home's heating and hot water systems, shell insulation, appliances, windows, doors, and lighting.
The energy conservation specialist will conduct the audit in your home. He or she will walk through your home and will show you ways you can save energy.
Upon completion of the audit, a computerized report is given to the homeowner. This report recommends what improvements can be made to save energy.
Included with the information, WMGLD customers will also find information about a great incentive and rebate program that helps them save money while saving energy!
Here's how it works:
Customers who do any of the following improvements can save 25% of the total cost of energy improvements up to a cap of $300:
- Attic insulation
- Basement insulation
- Rim joist insulation
- Wall insulation
- Pipe insulation, heating system
- Attic ventilation
- Bathroom ventilation
- Weatherstripping windows
- Weatherstripping doors

*Customers who participate in the incentive program must have an energy audit before any work begins. There will be no exceptions. All work reimbursed by the incentive program must come from a recommendation made in the energy audit. Copies of the audit (pre-and post-installation) must be submitted along with a copy of the contract or proposal before any incentive rebate will be given. Only one rebate per customer of record during each calendar year.
Rebates
WMGLD customers can also take advantage of an energy efficient appliance rebate program. This one-time rebate program does not require an energy audit, but does require the original sales receipt and proof of EnergyStar rating.
To participate, the customer must purchase an Energy Star®-rated appliance or energy-efficient hot water heater. The Energy Star® label identifies highly efficient products and appliances; by choosing Energy Star® products, you use energy efficiently, save money on utility bills, help make your home comfortable, and reduce air pollution.
